I bought this to have a fast SSD to use as an external backup/boot drive for my MacBook Pro (13” with Touch Bar, late 2016), plus added storage to back up image and video files when traveling.I wrote an initial review that didn't show up, but I came back to revise it anyway. Hopefully this one will actually get posted.I was initially impressed by its speed, as I routinely saw 950 MB/s from it. But... It'll read that fast indefnitely, but when I'm writing to it, it'll slow down after about 10GB of MacOS Finder copies, dropping from 900+ MB/s to only about 200MB/s. When I use the Digilloyd Tools Disktester program it's much worse, slowing down after only about 1.5 GB or so.It *is* a lot better for my use as a backup boot drive, at last: Backing up my 1TB boot drive with SuperDuper went from 1-1.5 hours on a rotating drive to only 15 minutes with this unit. More importantly, when I boot my Mac from this it’s usable; it just wasn’t workable to use it booted from the portable hard drives.I have to say that t it runs **very** warm when you’re copying a lot of data for a long time. I mean uncomfortable to hold in your hand warm. This doesn’t seem to bother it, but it concerns me to see a piece of electronics get so hot. (And that’s just the outside, I can only imagine how hot the SSD module inside gets.)Overall, it’s fine for my primary usage and just crazy-small which is great for travel. I don’t know how it would hold up under something like video editing usage, where data might be blasting back and forth routinely, for long periods of time, and any usage that'd depend heavily on write speeds would be a poor match.Picked this up for back-up for my computer. It's amazingly fast (I'm using Thunderbolt 4 ports on my computer). Also, scary light.I'll try to remember to update when I've had it long enough to determine longevity, but despite being a little pricy, I bought another one as well. What a great external drive. Small and fast. It was advertised as "up to" 950 MB/s, and I did not expect that I would see that level of performance. I got over 900 MB/s on both write and read. Oyen stated that they typically use an Intel 660 SSD in the 1TB Helix devices. Note that you can't buy that SSD with enclosure and cables for this price. I would consider this drive to be a real bargain. Don't hesitate to buy it.Although in a sturdy enclosure, this drive seems to he a bit "clunky" when set down on a surface. I would recommend buying the drive in the bumper or getting a bumper from Oyen for another $12. One other thing ... I did not think that this drive runs hot, as some of the reviewers say. It is warm to the touch, but the enclosure fins seem to keep it comfortably cool.I bought this drive in Sep 2020 to use for my Final Cut Pro Library workflow, as my internal drive is both almost full, and too slow for high-resolution video editing. Up until today it was working well, and fast. The drive is almost always warm, but it never seemed to get too hot.Today, though, I lost access to my 1.2TB FCP Library stored on the drive, with the blue indicator light flashing rapidly. Finder showed the library being empty at zero kilobytes, and I was often given the message that I didn't have administrative access to the contents (the drive wouldn't even show on disk utility either). Thankfully, after a computer reset and over 6 unplug/plug-in cycles of the external drive, I restored access and the indicator is a stable blue as it should be.Rating at 3-stars currently until I hear back from customer support, as a drive priced this high should not be failing so soon, and I worry it will completely fail without some sort of intervention. Will update accordingly.Normally, I would pass on an item that had no reviews nor a rating (which this one didn’t when I purchased it), but since this little SSD was so new I decided to look into the company and some of their other products to gauge the potential risk factor. Obviously, I decided to take said risk and, thus far, I'm really glad I did. This little guy is small sleek and super fast.....like, crazy super fast. The enclosure is basically one big heat sink, which seems to be working because it doesn’t get very hot even after prolonged use. The center of it can feel warm to the touch, for sure, but nothing major. Currently, I can't speak to its longevity but I'll be back to update my review if it doesn’t hold up over time. Otherwise, no news is good news. The only downside is now my boyfriend wants one for Giftmas.I’m using this on a 16” MacBook Pro and it’s fast. I’m getting close to 1GB/s reads and writes but it gets too hot when it’s busy with writes. This worries me that it won’t last very long. Only time will tell but I worry.Make sure you use the included usb-c to usb-c cable so it takes advantage of the USB 3.2 gen 2 speeds. I tried using the cable that came with my iPadpro and it’s very slow by comparison.Update: I purchased the drive on Dec. 2019. It's now April 2021 and it's still going strong. Zero problems so far. Highly recommended!Love how small this drive is and how FAST it is. File transfers are instantaneous on my 2019 MacBook Pro with USB C. Biggest downside is really with exfat I think, which is out of Helix’s control. I may reformat to Mac OS journaled to get around some of the weird errors I get. With exfat, it’s hard to safely eject the hard drive without relaunching finder every time so it becomes a pain.Purchased after reading tons of reviews of other units as well as sending a question to their website. Their customer service is incredible. Needed this to use as a back up to TONS of graphics that I didn't want to chance losing. Fraction of the physical size of my last external hard drive and quadruple the storage size. Very fast processing. Will be purchasing another soon for another computer. This SSD barely reached 400 MB/s on eithwe an M1 chip or intel chip laptop. I own both. Blackmagic Disk Speed Check. I am outraged by their claims. Now I have to go through the returns hell without a printer. As with other Oyen products I own, this is beautifully designed and made, and works flawlessly.Don't know why I bothered checking out the competitors with the better-known names--every one of them seemed to have a problem of some sort, judging by the reviews. But there are no problems with Oyen, and if by some small chance you had a difficulty, their customer support is the quickest and best in the business, and their warranty is 4 years! What more could you ask for?Great portable SSD. The fins to aid in cooling is a nice touch and helps the SSD maintain it’s read and write speed. Highly recommended.
